Maui Huliau Foundation -- It's All About Kids and the Environment!

Wow, has it been that long since my last post? Summer is looming large (I love this time of year), so now I have some time to pick up where I left off.

And what better topic to get back into the swing of things with than one involving filmmaking, Maui, and kids?

Malia Cahill, an energetic young woman who's passionate about all things environmental and who obviously has a way with kids, is the mastermind and force behind the dynamic Maui Huliau Foundation.

The Seabury Admissions Video, and the Story Behind It

"Hmmmm, 3 years -- that's 3 minutes per year!" my better half noted with an ear-to-ear grin. He of course was being facetious and knew what it had taken to get to this point: the crashed hard drive being the most memorable delay, not to mention the flexible deadline that got the best of me. It was only this summer that I made the decision to finish the darn thing already.

Not that I didn't have a grand time documenting the goings-on at school. And I honed my sports filming skills, practiced my ninja moves around the perimeter of classrooms, and learned how to make people feel more comfortable about being interviewed. And, my Seabury footage library is now bulging, begging to be used in other projects.

The song picked for the video has a story of its own:

"Rainbow Ridge" is from Jeff Peterson's album Maui on My Mind.  Jeff grew up in Olinda, and is a true Maui son. The title is very appropriate, given the multitude of rainbows we are blessed to witness in upcountry Maui, and Rainbow Ridge itself is just across the way from campus.

Here's what Jeff says about the song, on his official website:

"Rainbow Ridge:  Rainbow Ridge was the nickname of the place where Jimi Hendrix gave his final concert in 1970.  It is at the edge of the pasture where my ´ohana lives on Maui.  It was called Rainbow Bridge in the film of the concert and Jimi’s Maui visit.  I wasn’t born yet, but I have heard all about what a great party it was!  This song is for Jimi."

The song's fabulous slack-key riffs and its lively beat were perfect for the script. But it was the upcountry Maui connection that made the song the only one.

The video is now public, on YouTube and AKAKU. And it will soon be embedded on the school's website, for prospective students to enjoy.

I'm proudest of the fact that the video is an accurate portrayal of our school. It took 3 years to bring the video to fruition, and 32 years of being a part of the Seabury community to make it real.

Two fantastic journeys ...
